All Betts are on: Flyers sign center to 2-year extension
After dislocating his shoulder twice this season and only being able to play 39 games so far this season, Blair Betts’ hard work paid off today. Betts signed a 2-year extension with the Philadelphia Flyers worth $1.4 million. The cap hit will be around $700,000 yearly.
The 29-year-old has proven his worth this season by being the club’s best faceoff man and top penalty killer. He signed 0n to the Flyers as a tryout this offseason and has turned out to be a gold mine.
GM Paul Holmgren really hit a homerun on this signing. Betts has been a winner since coming to Philadelphia. When Betts is in the lineup, the Flyers always have a chance to win. It can’t be explained but their record with Betts in the lineup is far better than without him.
CSN’s John Boruk first reported the extension early Friday morning via his Twitter account.
Betts has 10 points(6G, 4A) this season in 39 games in the orange ‘n’ black.
Olympic bound
The Flyers have one final showdown before they head off to the Olympic break. Another home-and-home series, this time it will be with the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs are on some sort of high after snapping the Washington Capitals win streak at 14 games Wednesday in OT.
Philadelphia will host tonight’s matchup from the Wachovia Center at 6pm. Immediately after tonight’s contest the Flyers will head straight to Montreal where they’ll faceoff at 7pm tomorrow night.
Michael Leighton is slated to start yet again. Much deserved in my view. All the talk of the Flyers acquiring a goaltender through trade are misguided. Leighton deserves more respect from the Flyers fans.
Since joining the Flyers, Leighton has rung up a 10-3-1 record with a 2.21 goals against average and .925 save percentage. He has shown that he is fully capable of carrying the load when need be.
