Flyers First-Round Mock Draft

When I started looking around at who I believed the Philadelphia Flyers would draft with the 21st pick in the first round, I looked at glaring needs.

Obviously, the position in most need of upgrade is the blue line. The Flyers are in need of nice-sized two-way defensemen. With the 21st pick of the draft GM Paul Holmgren will have some options.

Now, I completely disregarding the fact of the probable acquisition of Jay Bouwmeester and just putting out the possibility.  Furthermore, the Flyers might end up having to trade this pick to acquire Bouwmeester.

That notwithstanding, i’ve looked at over 50 players and read their scouting reports and the one kid who I think will have his named called a week from now is, Dylan Olsen from Camrose in the AJHL.

Olsen, who’s stock has risen significantly since his stellar performance in the WJC-U18s. He ended up being said as Canada’s top defensemen. He has good size and is exceptional in both the offensive and defensive side of the puck. He possesses a high level of toughness, which would be highly accepted in Philadelphia.

A good quality of his according to a few different scouting reports throughout the NHL draft sheets, is he has a blistering shot from the point. Some have compared his stuff to the likes of Dion Phaneuolsenf of Calgary. If that’s the case, I think this would be a special pickup for Philadelphia.

Its important to note that he projected in most mock drafts to go between 15-24. That leaves the oppurtunity for him to be taken before the Flyers pick at 21.

If the Flyers miss out on Olsen, a goaltender might be in their immediate range of thinking.

As for other defensemen who might drop to the Flyers: David Rundblad-Sweden, John Moore-USA, Ryan Ellis-OHL, and Nick Leddy-Minnesota H.S.
