Knuble Gone? Boucher Back-Up

It’s about that time for NHL free agents, or in their eyes Christmas. For one Flyer, this could also mean an exit from the team he wants to legitimately stay with. Flyers forward Mike Knuble has not heard back form the Flyers as of 10pm. 2110016_flyers_v_panthers_feature

Knuble’s agent Kurt Overhardt stated that Knuble isn’t going to take a big pay cut just because of the Flyers cap situation. Overhardt expects over 16 teams to show interest tomorrow in the Flyers winger.

The Flyers want to give him a one-year deal with achievable incentives that could give him the $2.8 million, without accounting against the cap. Knuble is said to want a two-year deal.

I personally think that the Flyers should lock-up Knuble before midnight. This guy still has mileage left in the tank. He had 11 power play goals season, 27 total.

But, the main thing halting this deal is the Flyers cap. They are right now around $5 million under, with a goalie to sign still. If the Boucher deal goes through they will be just under $4 mill.

I think the future is grim for Knuble in an orange and black sweater. Unless he takes the one-year incentive laced deal, he will be with one of those 16 others next season. The departure would be very detrimental to the Flyers. Knuble is the only guy on the team that logs those hard minutes on the boards, and using his body as a force in front of the net.

Boucher Returning?

Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post reports that the Flyers will sign UFA goalie Brian Boucher once the free agency frenzy begins.

Boucher, 32, was stellar last season playing the backup role on the San Jose Sharks for the injured Evgeni Nabokov. Posting a 12-6-3 record with a 2.18 goals against average and a .917 SV % in 22 games, 20 of them he started. Gormley says the deal will be around $.750 million. Cheap, and well worth it. Sign him and let’s get started on trying to find a way to bring Knuble back.

Knuble is the critical piece right now.

There’s not that much out there that the Flyers can afford that will be an impact player, so get Knuble and Boucher done and head to training camp ready and healthy.
