Flyers Preseason Finale: What To Look For

display_image_GYI0058451081The Philadelphia Flyers are less than four days away from embarking on the highly anticipated 2009-10 NHL season. This Friday at 7 p.m. the Flyers will take on the Carolina Hurricanes live from Raleigh, NC.

However, the orange and black still have one last challenge that lies in front of them, the Minnesota Wild. The curtain will fall on the preseason tomorrow night from the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia.

Before the regular season kicks off where it becomes business, there are a couple things to look for tomorrow night.

1. This is pretty self-explanatory: How ready is Philadelphia for the start of the new season? The expectations for their hockey team are high, extremely high. Some major sports outlets have chosen the Flyers as their Stanley Cup favorite. Are the fans who earned the right to be called the most passionate in the entire league ready? I believe the answer to this is most definitely yes!

2. Who makes the best lasting impression: James vanRiemsdyk, Mika Pyorala, and Danny Svyret all have had eye-opening training camps. The Flyers have until Wed. at 3 p.m. to make their final roster decisions. Reemer and Pyorala have performed at a high level so far combining for five goals between them. Danny Svyret looks to be the guy who fills the void that left when the team waived defensemen Randy Jones this past Saturday.

What will vanRiemsdyk and Pyorala do with one more preseason contest under their belts is still unknown; however, one should think something worth talking about.

Coach John Stevens elaborated today how impressive Svyret has been throughout camp. Stevens said that Svyret has pretty much earned his spot on the defensive top seven. Ole-Kristian Tollefsen is also in the mix. He must stay healthy so he can show his worth to this club.

3.  Ray Emery, is he ready take over? The man who has come in here with a lot of pressure on his shoulders. Yet, from talking to him or watching his interviews he gives the impression of Mr. Cool. Emery, 26, has come to a town that has craved a star goaltender since the departure of Flyers Hall of Famer Ron Hextall. Emery has had spectacular numbers throughout the preseason thus far. Posting a 1.76 GAA and a .944 save percentage.

What will this talented superstar caliber goaltender do between the pipes for the Flyers, we will find out. For now, lets see how he finishes out with his start tomorrow night.

The Flyers would prefer a  strong finish to this preseason that has had some major ups and little downs. But, as we all know preseason is just exhibition. The real thing starts this Friday in Carolina. Hockey is back Philadelphia, lets prove that we are for real, and that we want Lord Stanley back on Broad Street.
