Flyers Dominance Continues, Pound Devils 5-2

90955553CM007_PHILADELPHIA_The Philadelphia Flyers haven’t had much luck in North Jersey lately. Until tonight. The Flyers dismantled the Devils beating them 5-2 at the home opener in the Prudential Center.

Ray Emery who put up five consecutive periods of shutout hockey, dazzled between the pipes once again. Thats over 111 minutes of shutout goaltending. Emery gave up his first goal of the season at the 9:44 mark in the third period. ‘Razor’ stopped 24-of-26 shots including some highlight reel types.

“They came pretty hard, we got a couple more goals and then they pressed. We did a great job getting the puck to the net and got five goals out of it,” said Emery after the 5-2 win over the Devils.

“I’m glad we got the two wins to start  the season, now looking forward to coming home and getting a win there.”

“Ray is so alert and so sharp in the net. He has unbelievable athleticism to save anything that get thrown at him. This team builds confidence from him because he’s so competitive,” said Flyers Head Coach John Stevens.

The Flyers defense sparkled in the opener last night; however, tonight the offense took full control of the puck. Devils hall-of-fame netminder Martin Brodeur was ineffective in his 1000th career start giving up five goals. Jeff Carter gave the Flyers the lead with 4:03 left in the first period with a wrist shot from Scott Hartnell.

However, the highlight of the game came when the Flyers PK unit burned a full 5-on-3 disadvantage where the Devils could barely move the puck around.

Ian Laperriere netted his first goal as a Flyer in the second period from a sweet backhand pass rookie James vanRiemsdyk. JVR now has three assists in his first two games.

Captain Mike Richards wrapped around the net and stuffed a shot past Brodeur with the puck hitting the goalies stick and bouncing up and into the net. That goal was Richards’ second in as many games.

Outstanding job tonight by both all-star defensemen Chris Pronger and Kimmo Timonen. Both were non-stop on the attack tonight making play-after-play slowing the game down to their advantage. Pronger recorded his first two points as a Flyer assisting both Richards and Matt Carle goals.

Darrol Powe also score his first goal of the season at 7:34 into the third.

“I thought the Giroux line was terrific. Our fourth line set the tempo throughout the game. Overall, this was a great game and im really happy with our performance tonight,” said Coach Stevens.

The Flyers next game will be Tues. for their home opener. They will faceoff with the Alex Ovechkin and the 2-0 Washington Capitals.
