Emery Stellar, Flyers Spook Canes 6-1

Hurricanes Flyers HockeyPHILADELPHIA- With ‘Yankees Suck’ chants ringing through the packed Wachovia Center, the Philadelphia Flyers put a beating on the Carolina Hurricanes offensively. The Flyers took part one of this action packed Philadelphia sports weekend beating the Canes 6-1.

The Flyers came out on this Halloween afternoon special netting three goals in the first period and never looked back. Defensemen Braydon Coburn scored his first two-goal game of his five career. Both Scott Hartnell and Matt Carle each had excellent games with a goal and two assists. Rookie James van Riemsdyk pitched in with a goal and an assist also.

“Actually, I was hoping I’d get a chance for another one,” Coburn joked after the game. “This is a real good confidence boost not just for myself, but also for the team.”

Coburn’s goals came within a span of 1:30 in the third period. One was off a 4-on-4 and the other a slapshot from the point.

“With Coby, its good where he has a game like that, it builds confidence. Get’s a couple goals and plays a lot and will help him move forward,” Coach John Stevens said.

David Laliberte, who played his first NHL game today, became the first Flyer since Mike Richards in 2005 to score his first NHL goal in his first game. Laliberte, 23, was called up right after the injury news came out about Danny Briere.

The 2004 fourth-round pick is also the 20th Flyer in the history of the franchise to score a goal in his first game.

“Its nice to see Laliberte come in and have success. Hes gotten better, better, and better while moving himself up the depth chart. He deserved to play with the skilled players during today’s game,” Stevens said.

Other than the offensive output, the main story of today’s game was goaltender Ray Emery. Emery shutout Carolina in the season opener on Oct. 2, made 39 saves in the rematch.

The game also had some demon attitudes that fit the occasion. There were 25 penalties called for 68 penalty minutes. A rough, physical game throughout that included four fights.

“Guys are sticking up for each other and that’s a big part of hockey,” Van Riemsdyk said. “We’re coming together as a team, becoming a cohesive unit.”

Matt Carle’s wraparound goal was his 100th career NHL point….GM Paul Holmgren said during the first intermission that Danny Briere received a shot in his groin yesterday. Holmgren said the winger/center is doubtful for Monday but could play as early as next weekend…..Defensemen Ryan Parent was taken out of the game after the second period for precautionary reasons……..Simon Gagne’s treatment for his two sports hernia’s is still up in the air. There are conflicting issues between the Flyers and Montreal doctors.
