Flyers look for playoff magic as they begin quest for their third Stanley Cup

Coming into the 2009-2010 season The Philadelphia Flyers were widely known across the NHL as a team to be reckoned with to contend and even win the Stanley Cup. Now with the regular season coming to end last Sunday The Flyers look to begin what will hopefully be a 2 month journey to play for the most prestigious prize in all of hockey: Lord Stanley’s Cup!

With that being said The Flyers open up the Stanley Cup Playoffs Wednesday night in Newark, New Jersey at The Prudential Center against long time division rival The New Jersey Devils. The Flyers are 5-1-0 against the Devils this season winning all three games at home and 2 of 3 at The Rock in Newark.

The Flyers have had success and hardships in the playoffs against the Devils over the years. Who can ever forget the 2000 playoffs when Brian Boucher made one of the greatest saves in Flyers history, then there was the heartbreak of having a 3-1 series lead and watching it all slip away as the Devils came back and went on to the Stanley Cup Finals where they would eventually prevail and win the Stanley Cup.

Probably the most memorable moment of  a Flyers Devils playoff series is when Scott Stevens knocked Eric Lindros out cold at the Blue Line after catching Lindros with his head down.

Then the most recent match-up came in 2004 when the Flyers beat the Devils in 5 games en route to a spot in the Eastern Conference Final where they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 7 games. Look for an intense rivalry atmosphere when these two teams get together for what is going to be yet another memorable playoff series when The Flyers soar into Newark Wednesday night.

Going into Wednesday nights playoff opener 3 keys that the Flyers must accomplish are:

Brian Boucher: Boucher has played stellar of late winning 2 out of his last 3 starts and coming off one of the biggest wins in his NHL career by defeating The New York Rangers in a 2-1 Shoot-Out Victory clinching a spot for the Flyers in the aforementioned Stanley Cup Playoffs, If the Flyers are going to go far in the playoffs they are going to need Bouch to continue to step up and win them hockey games.

Secondly The Flyers have to know where Kovalchuk is at all times when he is on the ice. Ilya Kovalchuk is one of the most prolific goal scorers in the NHL today and if you lose sight of a player of Kovalchuk’s caliper the puck is usually going to end up in the back of your net.

Finally, the Flyers need to have discipline.  Taking careless penalties and putting themselves in man down situations is going to be a struggle and could ultimately cost them a playoff series and may end their season sooner than they want it to.

If The Flyers stay disciplined and know where Kovalchuk is at all times on the ice and more importantly if Boucher brings his A game The Flyers will be very successful in the opening series of the 2010 NHL playoffs. Check your local listings and tune in as the Flyers battle the New Jersey Devils from The Prudential Center Wednesday Night at 7:30.
