Flyers steal Hamhuis from Nashville for Parent

The Philadelphia Flyers knew they needed defensive help. Well, they didn’t waste anytime suring that problem up. The Flyers have acquired the rights of the Nashville Predators’ top player, Dan Hamhuis.

On Saturday afternoon, the club announced that they have sent defensemen Ryan Parent in exchange for Hamhuis and a conditional pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

“Our intention is to get him signed prior to [July 1], and that is what our aim is at this point in time,” said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. “The sooner that we get going on trying to get this done, the better.”

Hamhuis is an instant upgrade to an already exceptional blue line. At 6′1 209-pounds, Hamhuis provides speed, a good shot from the point, and quality leadership to a team that lacked all of the above in the Stanley Cup finals.

“Obviously, it is sad to leave the Predators,” said Hamhuis. “I spent some great years with them and it is great organization to be a part of. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the city of Philadelphia and the Flyers.”

“I think Philly has an unbelievable defense corps,” said Hamhuis. “To join a corps like that makes the Flyers one of the tougher ones in the league. To play against the teams from the East, the conference has a lot of great forwards. Watching the playoffs, having a great defense will get you a long way.”

Hamhuis is a physical player, one who isn’t shy of being a grinder long the board to get the puck or make a big hit. He has the talent to be a game changer from a penalty kill or power play standpoint.

With this addition, the Flyer now have one of, if not, the scariest defensive corps in the NHL. With Pronger-Carle-Timonen-Coburn-Hamhuis, the NHL should be very aware of what’s in front of them.

“Dan Hamhuis is a good all-around defenseman,” said Holmgren. “He’s a guy who can play lots of minutes and he can play in a lot of different situations, from power play to killing penalties. He is another athlete we’d like to add to our team to continue to improve our defense.”

Don’t worry, the Flyers aren’t done with the fireworks.
